What is characteristic for a perfect house? Architects Joel and Meelena Turkel, the founders of Turkel Design have dealt with this question for over a decade.

“Maximizing flexibility and energy efficiency through the application of high-tec materials in sustainable and well thought out living environments.”

This concept from the Turkels was adhered to in their newest project: the Axiom Desert House. Since February 2019 it has been the family home of the married couple and their children.

The 195 m2 house is located in the desert city of Palm Springs, California. This house was inspired by the other 11 houses which make up the Axiom range by Turkel Design. The houses display different ideas and implementations of prefabricated constructions. The fundamental idea is that every customer can choose from a range of simple yet elegant base designs, which can be easily reproduced. The Axiom Desert house was constructed from the idea of Axiom 21110. The core concept of the prefabricated houses is intelligent design, resource conservation and energy efficiency.
The multifunctionality and modern design of the Axiom desert house is as unique as its placement in the middle of the desert city in California. The architect pair aimed to create a place which is a home, but which represents an Epoch of Modernity. This house was designed to bring the advantages of a modern prefabricated construction methods, while offering sustainability and flexibility to design enthusiasts.

“Palm springs is a city which appreciates good architects. We wanted to treat high-quality contemporary living in a way that isn´t intimidating.”

The city is affordable for young families because of its desert location, especially for families who want to realise the dream of having their own home.

The one-story prefabricated house lies at the foot of a mountain range. The two outer walls protect the inner space and provide the family with privacy. The large Boccia space invites family, neighbors and friends to play together. The garden site of the house opens up to a great view of the nature through full height sliding windows. Inside and outside life is interconnected through energy-efficient systems and products. The flat rooftop is interrupted by a raised central section, which lets additional light into the interior of the house and is equipped with solar panels.

The post and beam construction is an arrangement of many cubic elements and a combination of the materials: wood, tile and concrete. This connects hard and soft elements together. The thermally modified wood allows the interior to be adapted to the desert climate. The building process can be controlled regarding cost and time. Since it is a prefabricated construction method, many elements can be delivered ready for installation. To avoid high transport costs and the related pollution, the Turkels choose local products and materials.

The house is fitted with lots of multifunctional elements. Solar modules for electricity, concrete blocks for heat absorption and retention, double pane windows for energy efficiency and durable parquet and concrete floors to keep the house cool have all been integrated. The house is also free of fossil fuel.

The entrance leads directly into the large living and dining area which is complemented by an open kitchen. There is a spacious window seat lounge, which is fitted with cushions and is used by the family as a daybed. This windowsill is the heart of the house and the center point of everyday life. The large, full height glass window provides plentiful light and makes the interior of the house feel like outside. The sliding window can be opened completely and harmoniously connects the house to the garden and pool areas. The dining room also has a large sliding door which can be opened to the terrace.

The house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms which offer enough space for the 4-person family plus their friends and relatives.
The Turkels decided to use Cyprus ER29 handles on the 3-piece UER rose (American version) as well as on the European plan design rose. The roses differ in diameter, which is larger in the USA as the standard. The handle is a simple design and is slightly beveled at the end, matching the sloped roof of the house. The satin stainless steel surface speaks to the high quality of the handle. The 3-piece-rose technology was developed by KARCHER DESIGN itself. It offers support and protection through a mounting plate, a handle rose and a threaded cover ring. In addition, sliding door handles and the door stops EZ210 and EZ211 were installed. All products from KARCHER DESIGN were used in satin stainless steel to give more expression to the simple elegance and modernity of the products.

The Turkels have created a house that handles every situation of family life through clever design and multifunctionality. The carefully selected high-quality products give the house a special charm. The products of KARCHER DESIGN are a perfect match to the modern furnishings of the house and make walking through the rooms and architectural experience.
